Jan 06 - The first 1000 miles**

Thursday, January 6, 1972
LOCATION: Newport Beach; Las Vegas; Salt Lake City; Little America, Wyoming
Example of a 1963 Chrysler Imperial
(not mine)

Went to Matt's at 2:45 A.M. where we discreetly packed his stuff, unbeknownst to his sleeping parents. We left at 3:30 and I drove while he slept. Reached Las Vegas by 9:20, and Matt drove till a quarter to 3. We kept going like that, Matt sleeping while I drove, me sleeping while he drove (though I only got about 2 hours of sleep in all), we stopped occasionally to get gas & eat.

We spent about 40 bucks before the day was over. We had dinner at Denny's in Salt Lake City, where we picked up highway 80 from 15 -- the weather was cold and there was plenty of snow but the skies have been clear all the way from California.

We stopped at the fabled legendary Little America in Little America, Wyo. where we got gas & made use of their Deluxe Rest Rooms and took showers, shaved, recuperated, and rejuvenated. Things have been great so far. We'll probably reach S.D. [South Dakota] by Saturday. The car's doing terrific, no problems ['63 Chrysler Imperial].

We went over a thousand miles the first day. Hope our luck holds.
