Nov 29 - Newspaper: Trailer park violations**

Wednesday, November 29, 1972 - Page 334
LOCATION: Newport Beach, Santa Ana, Anaheim
UPDATE FROM 11/29/2013: Well how about that? For the first time, I calculated my earnings at the Ivanhoe from this pay slip, and it turns out I was making $1.75 per hour. Between Feb 1968 & March 1974, California minimum wage was $1.65 (info)
(2:30 PM 12/9/1972)
Left for work at 7:00 A.M. Twas a beauteous day, very windy, hence clear. Finished rooms 124, 125, & 126, then started 127, 128, & 129. Did as little as possible but Mike thought I was busy. Quit work at five and got home by 7:00 P.M. Watched T.V. alot. Now, Eye Sore Park has been getting publicity along with some other trailer parks in O.C. To fill you in, here's the newspaper clipping about the situation.

If you can't read the article, here is the important part:
Orange Coast Edition  DAILY PILOT
Orange County, California -- Tuesday, November 28, 1972 -- Ten Cents

NEWPORT WARNING -- 6 Trailer Parks Get 5-day Notice
by L. PETER KRIEG
Of the Daily Pilot Staff

Six Newport Beach trailer parks that city officials say have made no attempt to meet health and safety codes today were given five days to meet all state standards or tell it to the judge.

"We have posted six trailer courts with notices declaring them to be public nuisances," said Building Supervisor Robert Fowler. "If they don't make all repairs within five days, we will start filing legal action."

The six parks are Lee Haven Trailer Park, 2940 W. Coast Highway; Deluxe Trailer Park, 2912 W. Coast Highway; [Here's mine:] Bay Shore Trailer Park, 112 W. Coast Highway; Lido Village, 700 Lido Park Drive; Ebb Tide Mobile Home Park, 1560 Placentia Ave., and Beach and Bay Mobile Home Park, 7204 W. Coast Highway.

Fowler said the owners and managers of the parks posted were the only ones who refused to cooperate with the recent city council-initiated crackdown on all trailer parks within Newport Beach...

There are nearly 300 trailers in the six parks given notice this morning, Fowler said. Bay Shore Park [that's ours again, which I fondly called Eye Sore Park] at the corner of Dover Drive and W. Coast Highway is the most populous, with 100 trailers.

Councilman Richard Croul indicated he felt the actions taken by the building division may be harsh. "How can we justify this?" he said. "There are a lot of places in the city that encroach on the public right of way (one of Fowler's complaints about the trailers). We let other places stand that were built without a building permit," Croul said, noting that Fowler had also cited the erection of dozens of illegal cabanas in the parks. [Yes, we had an illegal cabaña for storage of our extra junk and it was truly an eye sore]

Fowler explained that the city is enforcing state laws and cannot be arbitrary.

It got mom pretty disturbed but I assumed it was just a political maneuver that would lose impetus, or at least take a long time before any serious action was taken. So far (it's December 9, Saturday), I've been right. From the date on this page to now, it has been learned that Eye Sore Park's property lease runs out about May, then the Irvine Company, who wants the land for development, can kick us out with 90 days notice. So we've still got 6 months to go, but I pro'ly won't be here when it all happens.
My abode at Eye Sore Park. Chuck is at the left leaning on my '63 Chrysler Imperial, and that's me wearing the leather hat I got in Rapid City. This is a 1973 photo taken after the canvas cabaña (it was under the awning) was cleaned up and removed to comply with city regulations.

Nov 14 - News from Chicago's Sue Latka

Tuesday, November 14, 1972 - Page 319
LOCATION: Newport Beach, Santa Ana, Anaheim
8:30 PM
Got the 7:00 A.M. bus. It started raining at about 6:45. Got to work at 8:45 and spent most of the day painting. It rained pretty good until about 3:00 or 2:00, then I replaced a couple of light bulbs which required the use of a looong aluminum ladder. Ken was there training after about 3:00. I got to page 62 in "2250." Got off work at 5:00, got home at 6:45.

I got a letter from Sue (she calls herself "Rusty" now) and she sent copies of some pictures. I'll mention their location in this book after I find a place for them. Had some broiled steaks for dinner. I'm still on one meal a day on weekdays. Mike got the Chevy Impala sold so I won't be stuck with having to buy it. That's good & bad -- good cause I'll have more money, but bad cause I won't have any transportation to go East in. I guess I'll hop a freight. No pro'lem.

From Sue's letter it seems she's getting sweet again -- Mark got dragged into the army, so she's not stuck with him anymore. So mayhaps on my way east I'll stop off in Chicago. The picture hereto attached was taken inside Bethlehem Cave, in the Shrine of the Watchacallit.

That's Bruce's hardhat, those are my hands, and Mike took the shot. I'm not bothering to track down the exact date, but it should be easy to find -- Around July 18, 19 or 20 [it was July 18], the time the Latka's got the tour. I watched the regular shows tonight -- "I've got a Secret," and "Maude." Nothing else good was on.

TODAY's NEWS: The Dow-Jones Average
In all its years of fluctuations, the New York Stock Exchange ticker showing the Dow-Jones industrial averages had never ever closed higher than 1000. But on November 14, 1972, the D-J average did it, finishing up the day just over the 1000 mark -- LIFE magazine, December 1972

Oct 17 - Dealing a Clockwork Orange***

Tuesday, October 17, 1972 - Page 291
LOCATION: Newport Beach, Anaheim

(1:00 AM 10/18/1972)
Got the 7:00 A.M. bus. Work today was repair of hardware, a little detail painting, and I organized the tool cart. Mark & Mary worked today. Linda is no longer with us -- she had a kidney problem and can't work, so Mike's hunting for another maid. Mike & I back-flushed the pool today. I got up to page 103 in "S.W.T.W.C." [Something Wicked This Way Comes]

Took the bus back from 10 to 5. Got into Santa Ana about 5:20. OCTD bus appeared 6:00. Got home around 7:00. Murray called and asked if I wanted to see Clockwork Orange. Later Chunk & He came by in his cruddy old station wagon and drove to the Peddler fish 'n chips place where I had my only meal of the day -- a BarBQue sandwich, a Turkey Sandwich & potato salad. Then we drove toward the movie at Fashion Island, but his car died about a mile from it. Our attempts to revive it were in vain despite the fact we took it to a gas station. (It died at a corner where there was a Shell & a Standard. We had to push it across the street to the Shell. They couldn't get it going.) So we left it there and ran to the theatre, getting there in about 7 minutes. We were late but not too late.
1971 Theatrical Release Poster
When I saw this Stanley Kubrick film in 1972 it was Rated X, but this verdict was appealed and it was revised to an R rating.
Watched Clockwork Orange and the second picture, "Dealing" (which I'd seen about half a year ago, it's pro'ly noted in this book somewhere), and it was all over at 12:30.

[I first saw "Dealing" on May 12, 1972, but I could not remember this film & found no record of it online... I just checked again and discovered this Wikipedia info -- "Dealing: Or the Berkeley-to-Boston Forty-Brick Lost-Bag Blues" is an adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel co-written with his brother Douglas. It starred Barbara Hershey and featured John Lithgow as a supporting character in his first film role. I still have no memory of it even tho I saw it twice. Below is a photo from IMDb.]
This memorable 1972 comedy/drama/thriller was a marijuana caper flick
Walked back to the Shell station and Murray's car started fine. He drove me home & I gave Chunk 40 for the motorcycle which he's gotta get into running condition. Tha's all. ---
