Aug 27 - Flying with a bomb on Western Airlines**

Sunday, August 27, 1972 - Page 240
LOCATION: Bethlehem; Rapid City; Salt Lake City; Los Angeles; Anaheim

(2:18:30 AM 8/30/1972)
BLECCH! I shan't use that blue felt pen again -- It soaked thru the page. Que sera, will be -- Sunday? What happened Sunday? Bruce woke up later than ever before, about nine, because he forgot to set his clock. He told me yesterday that he will be returning home [to Chicago] in the first week of September.

I got up for good around 11:00 -- Bruce was reading "The Merchants of Venus" in my "IF" magazine. Sr. Sylvester banged on the door. "Get up you sleepy boogers" she said. Bruce was wanted to entertain tourists in the Shrine. Yesterday he had to take some tourists into the lower cave, tho he'd never before done it and was qualified only for tours to the Shrine. Brad was already giving a tour and Jim was ill, so he was stuck with it. He improvised a lot. So now he's qualified and has to give tours.

I read a bit more of "I'm OK, You're OK," tried to call home again but failed, and talked with Fr. Henry, giving him my address so he can visit when he returns to California. He's trying to become a chaplain in the Navy, so will be in San Diego for awhile.

It became 1:30, and my flight left at 2:50, so I tried to find some transportation. I saw Bruce at the cave entrance with some tourists -- he'd finished one tour and was starting another. I told him I had to leave, so he quit what he was doing and eventually got around to driving me. We left in the van at 1:45. I was fairly sure I'd be late, but we weren't, tho it was pretty close. We got there at 2:30. Bought the ticket for $55 (Student Standby), but had trouble with the guy -- he wanted two forms of identification but I only had a Driver's License and Social Security card. He reluctantly accepted it, filled out a form, wrote the ticket, took my money and said the baggage had been taken out already so I had to carry it out myself. This was fortunate too, because my duffle bag weighed 80 lbs, and 70 lbs is the legal limit for single parcels. I packed the bomb in the Abbott's cabin that nobody belonged to -- It weighed 10 lbs by itself.

[I think I should explain that. The little 20-inch "bomb" was a World War II souvenir that nobody wanted so I adopted it as a cool curiosity. It didn't contain any explosive -- it was just a harmless paperweight -- but I wouldn't advise anyone to take something like this on an airline today.]
Photo of small World War II era bomb
The World War II bomb I had in my
duffle bag looked something like this
I came back with more than I went with, tho I discarded a couple of things any way. I staggered to the 737, left the duffle bag for the packers, and found an empty seat in the back (the very last seat). I stared out the window all the time -- We flew over Mt. Rushmore and I was on the right side (the right) so I saw it clearly from the air. Such a thrill.

Got into Salt Lake City Int'l Airport at around 4:15 and had to wait. The flights to LA were filled, so standby didn't help much. They had no room for me on the first flight, but I just barely managed to get on the 6:30 flight -- If I'd missed it I'd have to wait till 11:00. I bought the new Analog while waiting.

Got into LA around 7:30 (note the 1-hour time difference) and saw it from the sky for the first time in the daytime glowing golden through the smog. Beauteous. Tried calling Mom, then Dad, then Chunk -- Nobody home. Called Laramée and she told me to take a bus -- She was too tired to pick me up. Tried calling Mom, Dad or Chunk a few more times -- Got the operator mad. Gave up and took a bus -- Closest I could get to N.B. was Orange Co. Airport.

Ticket cost $4.00. Bus stopped at Disneyland Hotel, and I decided to get off there tho I had a farther ticket -- No refunds. I had $16.00 left so I wandered around until I found the lobby (the bus stopped under the monorail where there are a bunch of lockers -- I put my 35¢ into the only locker that didn't work, but I left my bag in it any way figuring no one could steal an 80-pound duffle bag even if they wanted to).

I asked the fellow in the lobby if he had any rooms for one person one night. They had a "Crash Pad" for business men for $16. I took it. An old fellow drove me out to the room (1930). I tipped him 25¢ tho, as he pointed out, I had carried the 80 pound duffle bag -- he took the quarter anyway.

From my room (which had an air conditioner, B&W TV, shower & king size bed) I telephoned Mom. This was around nine o'clock. She decided to come by -- while waiting, I took a shower and watched one part of the special series on Da Vinci. Went out to meet her at 10:30 P.M. She drove home around 12:30, and called again at 1:00 A.M. I got to sleep around 2:00 after playing with my recorder.

Aug 25 - "Guess Who" concert in Rapid City***

Friday, August 25, 1972 - Page 238
LOCATION: Bethlehem & Rapid City, South Dakota

10:30 AM
Woke up at six when Bruce's alarm went off. The full moon was still glaring in a sky just beginning to turn blue. I waved at Bruce and went back to sleep. Woke up again at 7:00 when Tom woke me up to shake my hand and say good bye. I went back to sleep and Bruce woke me up at 9:00, left, and I went back to sleep. He woke me and Dennis up again at 10:00, and kept us up. Everyone is working now.

There are tourists outside, and the tape was finally changed on the Musac speakers that blare out for the tourists. For the past two days it's been "Quando Quardo," "A Room Without Windows, A Room Without Doors," "Me And My Shadow," and "Two For Tea." Now there's something like Bach in a Moog Synthesizer.

Today is town day. We'll all be going into the big city to see the "Guess Who" concert. Until then, s'long. --
The Guess Who - American Woman

(11:00 AM 8/26/1972)
A while after lunch, and after beating Bruce in a game of chess that we took up from Joe and Tom Tucker after it was 2/3's thru (and after beating Ed swiftly), Me, Bruce, Joe, Ed, Jim Farmer, Dennis, and Tom Tucker got in the van and drove to town. We had to stop in Piedmont to pick up a package for Dennis from his brother full of health food. We had some groceries to pick up, so we spent an hour or so in Safeway -- I took a roll of film to a nearby drugstore to get it developed.

We left there and drove downtown (we passed the P.O. so I checked in it to see if my letter had come -- They told me I had to go to the annex on Jackson Blvd). We stopped in a men's store and bought a sweater for Gil's birthday which is Monday (he's still gone, picking up Jamal in Canada). We then proceeded on to the fairgrounds where the concert would be -- Bruce and I gave the guys our $6 for the tickets, and drove back to town.

In a Standard station that gave credit to Bethlehem we got a tire fixed (the rear tire went flat while Tom drove down to the hiway. He was going to drive into Rapid, but the van's problems forced him to start hitching from Piedmont). Bruce had to drive back on the balled spare tire (that's "bald," I think). We got the tire fixed & put on, we went to the P.O. annex at 5:30 but it had closed at 5:00, then we went to a liquor store to buy Dennis his Burgundy wine.

We drove back to the fairgrounds, found Dennis, and Joe led us to everyone in the stands. That was around 6:00. There were 5 groups that I saw (there were others B4 I got there) -- Before The Guess Who were "Teen King & the Princes" who did facetious performances of '50s songs; "Archangel," a bizarre group who were more dramatic than musical; "Sail Cat," the band that recorded "Motorcycle Mama" (Sue bought the single of that song in Chicago), and just before the "Guess Who" was "Jo Jo Gunn" who made noise that everyone liked so much they had to do an encore.

Before & during the "G.W.," Jim returned to the van because he was sick, Bruce left because of a headache -- then Tom & Ed left too. After the "G.W." had done 4 or 5 songs, Dennis, Me, and Joe went back to the van. Bruce said he'd seen Sue and said we'd have to wait for her because she was going to follow us back to Beth.

Joe & I went back to the concert to find her -- She was up front near the band. She said she could find her way back to Beth by herself, so we went back to the van (thru the same hole in the gate we came in, illegally). We left at 12:15, got back at 1:30.
[Side note regarding this flyer]
The sheet attached hereto was handed out as we entered the main gate at the concert.

Aug 21 - Holoexinoninframetasuperquasiomnidehyperirreantipreundounscrabble

Monday, August 21, 1972 - Page 234
LOCATION: Bethlehem, South Dakota

(11:30 AM 8/22/1972)
Bruce woke us up as usual (Us is the three people who share his room: Me, Dennis (who sleeps beneath me) and Ed (who sleeps beneath Bruce) -- and we all sleep as much as possible -- in fact, as I write this, it is 11:20 A.M., and Dennis & Ed are sound asleep -- I woke up at 11:00) -- Bruce always wakes up at 8:00, then he wakes us at about 9:00, then we go back to sleep. Monday he woke us up and left -- we eventually got up, and I found nobody was around. I gave up looking and came back to Abbott's Cabin to read.

It had rained heavily in the morning, and it rained sporadically all thru the day, just enough to prevent us from working. But a bit of work was done -- I got some more of the discarded cement in the van to be taken to the dump -- Bruce & Joe built some more forms for the area that will be cemented between the retreat house & Post Office.

There were lots of tourists. Tom & Bruce got a lot of Alabaster from Spearfish (Geri's uncle carved alabaster), so Bruce & I started some carving. He's making a cross, I was making two links, but they broke just before I finished. Fr. Gil notified me I should remove myself from the premises due to my lack of religious commitment, which is good cause I wanted to get back to California as soon as possible anyway.

I called mom to tell her I'd be leaving this week. Played chess with someone who I beat. Played scrabble with Fr. Henry & Dennis and beat them [Father Henry's score sheet below]. Bruce & I tried to construct a fairly large word from the tiles -- we came up with:

HOLOEXINONINFRAMETASUPERQUASIOMNIDEHYPERIRREANTIPREUNDOUNSCRABBLEYOVOXDJZIPSKIYEINGOUSALLY... ETC., AD INFINITUM, AL FIN.

We haven't determined its meaning yet.

Jul 15 - Laying 50 more feet of sidewalk

Saturday, July 15, 1972 - Page 197
LOCATION: Bethlehem, South Dakota

1:30 PM
Me & Greg are laying cement, Tom's finishing, Mike's mixing, Clint and John are hauling. Bruce & Tim are working on the retention wall. Two families appeared today, one is the Boursracks (or some such unpronounceable name). The other is the McKeevers -- seven people in all, plus one photographer (McKeever is a politician). We've been working fairly slow today.

(7:30 PM 7/16/1972)
I was wrong about the McKeevers, the people I saw were mere tourists. They didn't show up yet. Late that day the Gorsatch's appeared (that's as close as I can get to their name). So did a Philippine Los Angeles Priest by the name of Father Henry. We completed about 50 feet of side walk. I took a bath tho the water crisis continued -- there's a leak somewhere and they haven't found it.

We played poker again -- as usual, everyone was forced out by a lack of chips except me and Greg. It always ends up that way -- just me and Greg. Greg is a better poker player, but again I beat him, the same way I beat him last time -- matching pots (my pot is usually one percent of the chips -- he has the rest), and dealing five cards up -- best 2 out of 3 hands wins. I win constantly, despite the odds against it. We finally finished playing at 1:15 A.M. Somehow the screw came out of my glasses, so I couldn't wear them. Interesting, huh?

(7:40 PM 7/16/1972)
I finished "The Little Prince," and am now on page 96 in "I'm OK, You're OK."

Jul 12 - I'm OK, You're OK

Wednesday, July 12, 1972 - Page 194
LOCATION: Bethlehem, South Dakota

5:00 PM
Missed breakfast as usual. We worked on the laying of the cement (We: Me, Tom S., and Brad). The wall beside Storm's is getting started -- working on that are Bruce, Clint, Tom & sometimes me. On forms are Jim & Pearce. Dorothy is out walking around, so her foot is better. John, Greg & Mike were mixing and hauling cement.

Gordy left this morning for Minnesota. We had some tourists today, as we did yesterday. I almost caught a chipmunk yesterday, but it was too clever. I'll catch one someday. Yesterday, I learned a squirrel lives in the walls of Storm's. Hmm. I'm reverting to the events of yesterday -- that must mean I'm thru with today. Yes, it must.

9:00 PM
Mike & I spent some time throwing rocks into the Canyon and at nearby trees in the valley. We climbed down the original entrance to the Shrine of the Nativity and went in, walking out by just candle-light. Fr. Gil went to pick somebody up, I think -- Tim Somebody. There are going to be some more people coming up this week. I'm going to start "I'm OK, You're OK" now...

Jul 10 - Geri's photos of Europe trip*

Monday, July 10, 1972 - Page 192
LOCATION: Bethlehem, South Dakota

7:00 PM
I've just finished putting in the photos Geri took [April 21 & 22; April 29 & 30]. I missed breakfast today, of course -- it was windy and somewhat cloudy, but most of the day was warm, clear and calm. I did various things -- hauled cement to Clint & Tom S. who put it in the forms, shoveled dirt away from the bank (just now I wrote "Happy Birthday to me," on July 17, 72), finished cement, constructed forms with Pierce (Dorothy, by the way, turned her ankle badly yesterday, so she's incapacitated), and began grading the land near Storm's.

Jeff's gone, most of the nuns are still here, two groups of tourists dropped by to see the cave, Mike Mills beat me in two more games of chess, and I read some more in "The Thing In The Stone" [by Clifford Simak originally published in Worlds of IF Science Fiction, March 1970: A man who suffered brain damage can see the ancient past & hear the traffic of the stars -- and a mysterious creature trapped under a mountain...]. I'm learning to find more time where I can now, so I'll be doing more reading, some writing, and possibly some artwork.

John, Bruce, Clint, Tom & Tom are gone now, out helping a doctor move his motorcycle from Wonderland Cave. Jim's out someplace playing his guitar (I can hear the music vaguely). I am now in Abbott's, and Mike and Greg are in the next room fooling with some psychological test. Brad is unaccountable as usual. Today Gil mentioned that he'll want me to do some art work for a pamphlet. Progress on that will be forthcoming. Now I'm going to write captions for the Europe photos. -- It rained for a while today, then cleared up. The Democratic convention took place. I lost in poker.

Jul 09 - Geri from Europe trip visits*

Sunday, July 9, 1972 - Page 191
LOCATION: Bethlehem, South Dakota

5:00 PM
This being a Sunday full of Nuns, there were more rituals than usual. I got up at 8:45 and everybody went to mass at nine. I din't. I played chess with Mike Mills (presently I am one game ahead of him) during which we attended a prayer meeting, and Geri Langer showed up while it was in progress, along with a few other people. I had breakfast today for the second time since I've been here -- it was at 9:30 so I couldn't miss it.

I played Penny some more games (won 2 or 3, lost one). Saw Geri's pictures that she took when we were in Europe. A couple loads of tourists came today. As usual, today is warm and fairly clear. Finally, I've caught up again. Swell --

Sunday was a very lazy day -- I spent my time at the old entrance of the cave overlooking Horseshoe Bend and read "World's Best SciFi, 1971" (The Thing In The Stone). Penny & Geri left with Geri's gang, and we all had an affectionate farewell -- they'll be back soon. Very soon, I hope. Geri let me have whatever small prints of her Europe photos I want. They are on pages 112 & 113; 120 & 121.

Played some more chess, and played poker until midnight. I won extremely well, beating everyone. Jeff left early Monday morn. Sunday nite was extremely windy and the skies were clear and silent, but on the western horizon I could see the electric flashes of a lightning storm, sometimes illuminating the sky for several seconds.

Jun 29 - Preparing for South Dakota trip

Thursday, June 29, 1972 - Page 181
LOCATION: Newport Beach, California

8:30 PM
OH YEAH -- I'M SPOSED TO WRITE IN HERE, HUH. OKAY, HERE IT IS.

Got up about 10:00 when mom called to suggest her driving over here to pick me up so I could cash my check. I took a bath, during which, I am told, Grandma Dot came by bringing a bunch of flowers (the flowers were meant for Brazel, but due to technical difficulties they couldn't be accepted, so Dot gave them to Mom). I called to get on the Western Airlines standby list, but learned there was slight chance of getting a seat (busy weekend). Mom came by at noon. I got a letter in the mail from Bethlehem, S.D. 'bout the flood [see June 27 entry].

I withdrew $40 from Mariners (it was decided I'd get a reserved seat for $83, instead of standby for $55). I got home and called for the reservation, and then I called Beth to tell them I was coming tomorrow at noon. Sunned for a couple hours, then picked up mom, and we drove to her bank, Centinella (we met Mike there) and she did some transactions. It was in the 80°s today, and due to the 4th of July weekend, Newport was beset with tourists, traffic, and scantily clad folks of the California type. Anyway, I now have $144.89 in my wallet for tomorrow -- minus the $83 ticket, and I have a bit for pocket money. Mom and I drove to Penny's and bought me clothes. I now am packing my stuff, cause I'll be leaving early tomorrow. That's all I have room fo[end of page]

May 28 - Holiday weekend

Sunday, May 28, 1972 - Page 149
LOCATION: Newport Beach, California

11:50:50 PM

Goddup at about 1:30 P.M., sleeping through a visitation by Jordan who was in a fairly serious auto accident on the 24th, so mom tells me. That'll teach him to drive. It was hot today -- a record braking 96 mark of the merc today for LA. And, it being a holiday, there was the usual gathering of tourists wandering about our quaint little village.

Mom was determined to clean the place up, so I removed and replaced the flourescent lights in the living room; removed, cleaned, broke, and replaced the long narrow strips of fogged glass concealing those lights; I cleaned what remained of the ceiling; and I decapitated the legs off of the old table that used to be in the living room (yes, I know I used 'decapitated' wrong). During all of which Mom & I played five games of chess, three of which I won.

Larry phoned looking for dad, though his whereabouts by me were unknown. I'm now on 48 in "Thother," and on 109 in "Mansrisetocivilizationasshownbytheindiansofnorthamericafromprimevaltimestothecomingoftheindustrialstate." Moving right along, ...... Mom just baked a cake, and today, we et corn on the cob and broiled steaks. And watermelon. I'm still hungry however. So what. (No, I'm not going to put a question mark after that.) Tis now 12:04:45 A.M. --- DNE EHT ---

[TIME-OUT: In the past-entry for April 24, a note dated for today, "Sunday morn, May 28, 1972 -- 12:46:55 A.M." (more sensibly described as "Saturday nite, May 27") mentioned a color pencil drawing that is currently attached to the entry for May 26, page 147. Are you confused? So am I. Got up at noon thirty after going to sleep at six. This place has been invaded by tourists. I have no conception of the time changing outside Eyesore Park, but I'd guess we must be in the midst of a holiday of some sort (Easter pro'ly). Took a bath and got the mail and mailed my letters. All the mail was stuff for Mom, but one big envelope was for me -- the Star Trek stuff finally got here. It's about time. I sent for it  forty 5  days ago. I got the IDIC (Vulcan pendant) [Gene Roddenberry crassly inserted this item into a story -- Episode 60: "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" -- merely to have a Star Trek trinket to sell to people like me], the Enterprise charm (22 karat plated), USS Enterprise & Galileo plans, Enterprise & Kirk photos, Gold leatherette insignias (3), insignia decals (8), & seven packets of film clip frames (10 clips in each). RAH!
IDIC = Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations
Dad & Larry came over today -- so Mom got a chance to smoke (Larry however doesn't smoke), and Dad brought a bunch of mail -- for me a couple magazines and the third volume in the TIME-LIFE Photography series. Larry has seen Silent Running. Larry gave Mom her sapeeny [subpoena], or whatever the heck it's called, for the divorce thing -- I guess a third person has to serve it. Dad gave Mom some money, gave me $5, took the typewriter, said he might get me a job at Aeroneurotic [Aeronutronic] for the summer, and the two guys left, after about an hour. I finished eating the Easter Rabbit. Washed the dishes, mounted the Star Trek film clips (72 of them). And closed this here entry for today -- 11:06:54 P.M. FINIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

4:00 PM 3/30/72
Last night at 1:30 A.M. I went for a walk on the hill overlooking the Bay. It was a full moon, and about 45°. I did some exercise, and returned home at 2:30. Got to sleep at six A.M. Got up at 10:45 AM. Went for the mail, and got a letter from Soozwol [Sue Latka]. She's getting pretty chummy. Spring has indeed sprung. I went kayaking (the beach was crawling with beautious bikinied gals - WOW!) and reached the fish infested waters of Back Bay. Left at noon thirty, just got back and Tacosumi (who is in heat) was here with another cat. The surprised beast ran into my bedroom and stationed itself in one corner of the window sill, displacing a couple of encyclopedias residing thereby. For the past ten minutes he's been there, nervously glancing at me, then out the window, and back again. Taco is resting on the floor, apparently concerned, but both of them seem to be calming down due to boredom. To be continued --

A couple minutes later: the Tom cat was relieved that I wasn't hostile. With difficulty, I removed him from behind the lamp and set him outside on top of the cabana roof through the open screenless window. Taco was slightly frantic and I set her beside him. She groaned a little at him. He left shortly -- In the mail there also came The Big Book of Astronomy that LIFE was pushing me to buy. I have it here, so I can find out what kind it is. -- Tis now 4:20:53 P.M.

MULLET: The mullets are blunt-nosed, warm-water fishes of both Atlantic and Pacific. They are common in shallow water, where small schools may leap in unison when frightened. Mullets feed on aquatic plants and mud but they sometimes bite on doughballs. A good food fish, they are often netted and smoked. Of several species, the striped mullet is most common; it grows to 2 ft. Tis now 4:39:22 P.M., 3/30/72.

7:00 PM 3/31/72
Incidentally, I shaved my beard yesterday -- it was about four millimeters long. Today is technically good Friday, so things are closed and people are home. Mom didn't have to work today. I got up at quarter to eleven. Got the mail (Popular Photography among it). Found out Pennys was selling Polaroid cameras for 15 dollars with trade in of old polaroid. I went to the bank to withdraw some money but it had closed at noon. So I went to the stationery store and bought fifty envelopes, and fifty return envelopes.

At about 1:30 I went out in the kayak & paddled to back bay. Two fish smashed into the boat and one struck my right shoulder. I threw bread to the birds but they didn't want it. After four hours I paddled back home and returned by a quarter to six. I've gotta write a letter to Soozwol today sometime. Next week Mike & I are riding to Las Vegas on his new Kawasaki. Mom's gone now (7:05:00), out someplace with Lois. Barbara called her. Tomorrow Mom's going to King's for the races -- Chunk is in them -- and Murray is hitching a ride. Time now is 7:06:20. Fini.

Jan 16 - Warm weather, new plans

TOMMY 1969 The Who
1:30 PM
Last night after Matt left, Keith & Wheez came to the stereo cabin to play cards. I played some records, then I put on "Tommy," which I'd never heard before. Keith & Wheez left at about two, and I listened to TOMMY till 3:30. I went outside and saw three deer -- one of them walked to the block of salt to lick it. I watched them for about ten minutes -- they ran away and I went to bed.

I got up around 11:30. It's 56° now, and the snow is turning to mud. I ate the last icicle -- the rest of them have gone to greener pastures. The roofs are dripping, and we're leaving the doors of the cabin open for fresh air.

I called mom and dad, and now things are like this: Jack's flying up here no matter what, and Matt and I will drive back to California with him -- Jack will pay back the $40 to Gil, and finance the trip back. He's supposed to be here Tuesday. It's all over. It was a hollow victory, but a victory nevertheless. The problem is I'm not sure I was fighting for anything. More good has come out of this than bad, so I guess I spent my money wisely.

(3:00 PM 1/17/72)
Sunday is a day of rest, and that's what everybody did. Brad went walking for a few hours -- the sky was clear and the weather warm. Keith layed around playing his mandolin. A few tourists came and Wheezie took them thru the cave. We all watched "In Harm's Way" in Storms [the Stereo Cabin] till 1:00. Finally got to sleep at about 2:30 or 3:00.
